Dune

Frank Herbert · 1965 · 412 pages

On the desert planet Arrakis, water is wealth and spice is power. Paul Atreides arrives with his family to take a dangerous fief — and walks into a trap laid by rival houses, an emperor, and a planet that thinks in centuries. Sand, politics, and a coming-of-age that refuses to stay small.

Why we picked it

Big, slow in a good way. Ecology, loyalty, and a kid everyone wants to use as a weapon. Start here if you want a world that feels older than the page.

Something to think about

If a planet could teach you a religion, would you trust what it wanted you to become?

The story is fictional but it reads like human history that never happened. The world -building is insanely realistic. Let's ask ourselves why it is so realistic. Is it because the author wove historical stories into the world creation?
