Cinder

Marissa Meyer · 2012 · 390 pages

In New Beijing, the city's best mechanic is a cyborg girl with a secret. A plague is spreading, a prince needs a partner for the ball, and Cinder's stepmother would rather she stay in the garage. The Lunar Chronicles retells a fairy tale with spaceships, android hearts, and a revolution waiting under the floorboards.

Why we picked it

If you like fairy tales, clothes, and girls who fix things, start here. The romance is tender, the world is huge, and it doesn't talk down to you.

Something to think about

If you could replace one part of yourself with a machine, what would you choose — and what would you refuse to give up?
